Amorim: "The team were very focused"

By Sporting CP
08 Nov, 2021

The coach assesses the 0-2 win on Matchday 11

Following Sporting Clube de Portugal's victory over FC Paços de Ferreira, coach Rúben Amorim analysed the performance that saw his team pick up the three points away from home.

"Our team were, once again, very focused. They had more energy than in Arouca. We controlled the game much better. We knew that FC Paços de Ferreira were very strong and their defence was very good. We got into positions to finish many times in the first half. FC Paços de Ferreira had a few breaks, but without much danger. In the second half, with the opening goal from another set piece, we settled in better. FC Paços de Ferreira had to go after the result and the game practically ended with our second goal. We could have scored more", he said in his post-match press conference.

"I want to give special praise to Tabata, who has suffered a lot of injuries. The way he came in today was very strong. We controlled the game from there."

Asked if Sporting CP began the game under pressure, considering FC Porto's victory at CD Santa Clara, Amorim explained that, at this time of the season, the table is not given more than a cursory glance.

"We are always under pressure, because we are on a winning streak and we know it is difficult to maintain. The focus must always be on our team. FC Porto's game doesn't concern us. At this stage of the season, it is of no interest", he said.

For the coach, a run of eight consecutive victories and the football played by his side make this the strongest point of the 2021/2022 season so far.

"It's a good moment. We're solid. We have brought back Tiago Tomás, [Luís] Neto felt a problem with his leg again, but otherwise we have all of our players available. When we have all the players and we are playing well, it's a good moment. I can say it's the best moment of this season."

Finally, he assured that the results that Sporting CP have achieved as of late have less impact on the group than the way in which these triumphs have been obtained.

"Results are important, but the way we're playing and winning, the concentration and the fact that we don't concede goals, have a very good impact on the group and on the fans. It creates a healthy wave of momentum. It's about riding this wave knowing that some day - and I hope it's not too soon - things can change", he concluded.

Three more points against FC Paços de Ferreira

By Sporting CP

A 0-2 win takes Sporting CP into the international break

Sporting Clube de Portugal took a 0-2 win away to FC Paços de Ferreira on Matchday 11 of the Liga Portugal season, through goals by Gonçalo Inácio and Pedro Gonçalves.

The game took place amidst cold temperatures and in front of a large number of Sportinguistas at the Estádio Capital do Móvel cheering on the team after their success in the Champions League in midweek.

Coach Rúben Amorim made two adjustments to the starting lineup from the game against Beşiktaş JK: Ricardo Esgaio and Nuno Santos replaced the injured Pedro Porro and Zouhair Feddal, who started on the bench.

In the first ten minutes, Sporting CP had two chances to score. Firstly, the in-form Sebastián Coates headed a corner kick taken by Pablo Sarabia, with goalkeeper André Ferreira saving. Shortly thereafter, a powerful shot by Ricardo Esgaio from a cross by Nuno Santos was also kept out.

In response, FC Paços de Ferreira shot wide through João Pedro, as Sporting CP remained solid in defence and did not give the home team space to get close to scoring.

Shortly after half an hour of play, Sarabia spotted Esgaio on the right, the latter sending an effort whistling across the face of goal.

Just before halftime, FC Paços de Ferreira had their best opportunity in the first half, with former Sporting CP player Vitorino Antunes striking and Matheus Reis heading out for a corner.

The start of the second half proved to be extremely important for the outcome of the match. After 47 minutes, Esgaio crossed for Nuno Santos to shoot into the side netting off an opposition player, and from the ensuing corner kick, Sarabia put the ball in the area, Sebastián Coates flicked on and Gonçalo Inácio headed in to make it 0-1.

FC Paços de Ferreira could have levelled soon after, in a chaotic sequence that saw several shots blocked by the defence, but the visitors dominated the second half.

In the 59th minute, Pedro Gonçalves shot wide and, close to ten minutes later, Bruno Tabata replaced Sarabia. He would play a part in the second goal, releasing Esgaio on the right for a well-placed assist for Gonçalves.

Paulinho, Matheus Reis and Tabata all had attempts at a third, whilst Coates had a goal disallowed for offside.

Jovane Cabral's introduction and a Daniel Bragança chance on 90+5 minutes were late highlights, in a game that ended 0-2 and earned another three points for Sporting CP.
The team will be back in action on November 18th, hosting Varzim SC in the Taça de Portugal.

Sporting CP: Antonio Adán [GK], Gonçalo Inácio, Sebastián Coates [C], Matheus Reis, Ricardo Esgaio, João Palhinha, Matheus Nunes (Daniel Bragança, 80'), Nuno Santos, Pablo Sarabia (Bruno Tabata, 68'), Pedro Gonçalves (Jovane Cabral, 89') and Paulinho.

Amorim: "We want to win to maintain our position"

By Sporting CP
07 Nov, 2021

The pre-match press conference before facing FC Paços de Ferreira

Back in Liga Portugal action after the Champions League triumph against Beşiktaş JK in midweek, Sporting CP visit FC Paços de Ferreira on Sunday on Matchday 11.

Previewing the match, coach Rúben Amorim gave a press conference in which he talked up the importance of winning the next match and equaling the best run of consecutive victories from last season.

“Winning is always important. We want to win the game to maintain our position, and the feeling going into the two-week break is always better with a victory. We are still alive in the UEFA Champions League, we are in the Taça da Liga and then we have a game to play in the Taça de Portugal. It will be much better to win and have that break, because the players also need to rest”, considered the coach, adding: “Those who go away with the national team also rest and train, but with a change of environment. If they stay, they'll have to work very hard, but then I'll give them some time off, because they deserve it”.

To that end, Amorim turned the focus back to FC Paços de Ferreira: “It will be a very difficult game that will be completely different from the UEFA Champions League. The players are prepared for the change in competition. FC Paços de Ferreira will be much more aggressive and they are a team who know us much better than Beşiktaş JK”,  he said.

“When you play against a big team, your team plays without responsibility. A full week to prepare always helps, they have an experienced coach and they have Vitorino [Antunes] there, who must have helped them. We have to be prepared for a team who react very well when they lose the ball, who commit a lot of fouls and are very incisive in attack. That's what we have prepared for, without having much time. We did it well and we have our way of playing set out”.

Tiago Tomás will be available again, having recovered from an injury, but Pedro Porro was confirmed by the coach as being sidelined.

“Tiago has recovered and will be called up to the squad. He can't play for long, but he is an important player for us. Porro is out, but we have to look on the positive side: He has two weeks to recover and we have [Ricardo] Esgaio and [Gonçalo] Esteves in the meantime. We're ready for anything”, he guaranteed.

Amorim also addressed the offensive production of the trio comprising of Pedro Gonçalves, Pablo Sarabia and Paulinho.

“They've been doing well. The three spots up front are not guaranteed. Nuno Santos has had a great impact on our team, both in terms of goals and assists. Those who have to play know that the others have had a great impact as well - and I don't forget that”, he stressed.

Finally, he expressed his gratitude for praise from opposition coach Jorge Simão, but reminded journalists that “there are great teams in Portugal and we could lose to FC Paços de Ferreira. We know that we have to score and win the game”, he concluded.

Amorim: "The players made everything easier"

By Sporting CP
04 Nov, 2021

The coach was content with a 4-0 win in the Champions Leaguejj

After the win over Beşiktaş JK in the UEFA Champions League, Sporting Clube de Portugal coach Rúben Amorim praised his side and highlighted the great performance from the entire team.

“The players made everything easier. We started well and, despite Porro's injury taking away some of our quality and breaking the rhythm of play, we came back and scored the goal. Then we moved our way naturally into a 3-0 lead. In the second half we managed the game, but we had opportunities to score more goals. We weren't as tight at times, because we were comfortable, and we lost some balls that we shouldn't have lost,” began the coach in his post-match press conference.

“Beşiktaş JK having players unavailable helped us. They weren't as strong as they were in the game in Turkey, but I'm very happy because it was all down to our players,” he explained, before talking about the importance of the home fans.

“I want to say some words to the fans. It wasn't necessary for the coach and the players to ask for their presence, because they were going to be here anyway. Last season, even without being able to watch the games, they always waited for the team outside the ground. It's nothing new for us, but we thank them very much.”

As for Paulinho, who scored in the match, Amorim expressed appreciation for the confidence that the fans have been giving the striker.

“Paulinho has to be grateful for the recognition that the fans have for his work, not just for the goals he scores. When he has to play, whether applauded or whistled, he will always give his all. I'm very happy for Paulinho, and he deserves it,” he reflected, before addressing Pedro Porro's condition after he went off injured.

“He has a muscle injury and it will be more difficult for him to recover overnight. We shall see tomorrow, but it's not worth hurrying him. The most important thing is to look at the performance Esgaio had when he came on. If Esgaio is tired or can't play, Gonçalo Esteves is ready and the kids need those opportunities.”

Asked about the club's hopes in the Champions League, the coach said that: “Even before the game played in Turkey, we said that we were not thinking of third place, but rather of qualifying for the knockout stage. In football, anything is possible, and we proved that last season. We are inexperienced, but we believe a lot in ourselves and when this is the case, everything is possible,” he concluded.

Paulinho: "We carried out our plan to the letter"

By Sporting CP
04 Nov, 2021

The goalscorer reflects on the 4-0 win over Beşiktaş

Paulinho, who scored the third goal in the match against Beşiktaş and was one of the most prominent players for Sporting CP, talked after the final whistle, and commented that "it was the team that made this game easy".

"Beşiktaş JK are a good team. They are very dangerous and have very good players up front. We were very competent and we carried out our plan to the letter",  explained the 28-year-old forward, thanking the Sportinguistas for their support.

"Their support has been constant and today, once again, the affection they gave me was noted. I hope I can reciprocate that; their support has been incredible and it's not easy to describe what we feel", he revealed.

For the Portuguese international, the team playing at home again against Borussia Dortmund could prove to be an advantage.

"The fact that we will be at home could make a difference because of the atmosphere, as we saw today. When we played in Dortmund, despite it being a mythical stadium and the atmosphere created there, we spent the 90 minutes hearing our fans sing. That factor can make a difference", he stated.

"The support I've received has been incredible and it hasn't been about whether I've scored or not, but rather for the way my teammates and I perform on the pitch. The fans see how we defend and how we give everything for the club in every game. When we fail, they know that it's not due to carelessness or distraction. Sometimes it's bad luck and sometimes we're a little tired because we run a lot. I can only promise total dedication", he concluded

Four-some performance earns second win over Beşiktaş JK

Sporting CP take a 4-0 victory at home in the Champions League

Sporting Clube de Portugal beat Beşiktaş JK 4-0 on Matchday 4 of the UEFA Champions League, taking a second victory over the Turkish side. With the win, Os Leões climb to second place in Group C with six points, level with Borussia Dortmund, and guarantee at least a spot in the Europa League Round of 32.

Despite the 1-4 result achieved away in Turkey, the team knew that they could not relax in a match that, like that encounter, featured high intensity.

The visiting side were without notable names such as Pjanić, Batshuayi, Vida and Rosier, whilst Sporting CP coach Rúben Amorim fielded the same lineup as in the first game.

The first serious warning came from the feet of Paulinho, who was set up by Pablo Sarabia but struck against the crossbar. Seconds later, another move involving the same players saw the opposition goalkeeper saving with his feet.

In the 17th minute, Pedro Porro was forced off through injury, making way for Ricardo Esgaio. Beşiktaş JK's most dangerous passage of play followed, with two shots on goal and another that missed the target.

However, Sporting CP would take the lead on the half-hour through Pedro Gonçalves. After receiving a foul inside the area, the midfielder took the resulting penalty himself, scoring from the spot to make it 1-0.

A permeable defence was breached again shortly after, as Gonçalves scored again with a confident finish just minutes after his opener. Paulinho then struck with his left foot from outside the area, rocketing the ball in to take the score to 3-0.

In front by a comfortable margin at the break, Sporting CP came into the second half imposing a more patient circulation of the ball, maintaining control. Only seconds had passed since the restart when Sarabia tried to cross from the left, but his ball took a swerve and ended up hitting the crossbar. Shortly thereafter, a Matheus Nunes effort was kept out by Destanoğlu.

Sporting CP increased their advantage to 4-0 on 56 minutes, from an excellent run down the left side. Matheus Reis crossed into the area, where Sarabia shook off his marker and turned the ball into the net.

In response to the significant lead, Rúben Amorim refreshed the team with the introduction of Daniel Bragança and Nuno Santos, replacing Matheus Nunes and Paulinho.

With the game seemingly in the bag, the intensity dropped in the final half hour and Beşiktaş JK moved higher up the pitch. But, despite providing scares for Adán on occasion, they failed to convince. In second gear, Sporting CP enjoyed two chances for Bragança, and one for Nuno Santos.

The only notable incident in the final minutes was Souza's late sending off, as Sporting CP claimed their second win on the bounce. They remain in the fight for entry into the Round of 16, with two games of the Group Stage remaining.

The fifth match, at home to Borussia Dortmund, is scheduled for November 24th, while the sixth will be away to AFC Ajax on December 7th. Before that, Sporting CP will visit FC Paços de Ferreira this Sunday in Liga Portugal.

Sporting CP: Antonio Adán [GK], Gonçalo Inácio, Sebastián Coates [C], Zouhair Feddal, Pedro Porro (Ricardo Esgaio, 17’), João Palhinha, Matheus Nunes (Daniel Bragança, 60’), Matheus Reis (Rúben Vinagre, 71’), Pedro Gonçalves (Jovane Cabral, 71’), Pablo Sarabia and Paulinho (Nuno Santos, 60’).

Amorim: "We need everyone with us to help the team"

By Sporting CP

The Sporting CP coach talks to the media ahead of the game against Beşiktaş JK

Sporting Clube de Portugal welcome Turkish side Beşiktaş JK this Wednesday on Matchday 4 of the UEFA Champions League group stage, and coach Rúben Amorim spoke ahead of the game in a pre-match press conference.

Speaking about the preparation for the contest, he explained that he had shown his team a video of the entire first meeting with this week's opposition.

"The players realised that for 15 minutes we had almost none of the ball, and Beşiktaş JK could have scored. The game suited our characteristics. We are good at defending and transitions. We told the players to look at the game itself, and not the result. There is no illusion. It will be a very difficult game, in which we will have to be better than we were in Turkey -especially with the ball."

Amorim then appealed for the presence and support of Sporting CP fans at the Estadio José Alvalade, recalling that the team were received in Istanbul amidst a hostile atmosphere.

"The team need their help, as we are inexperienced. There was an adverse atmosphere in Turkey, which spurred the opposition on at the beginning. We want to do the same to them. It is never too much to create a connection between the team and the fans. I expect a great atmosphere. It's the Champions League and we can fight to reach the knockout stage, so we need everyone with us," he stressed.

The coach also insisted that there was no favourite to win the game.

"The same way we won in Turkey, Beşiktaş JK can win here. We want to win. We played well in Turkey and we can play better. We know Beşiktaş JK well, and they know us too."

Sporting CP have been scoring several goals from set-pieces as of late, and Amorim congratulated his assistants Adélio Cândido, Carlos Fernandes and Emanuel Ferro for their contribution to that.

"The merit belongs to the coaching staff who specialise in dead balls. I want to emphasise the amount of chances that we have. We haven't scored many goals from open play and we've got them from set pieces. I'm happy because it emphasises the work of the people here, who have a lot of talent and are hard workers," he said.

After revealing that Tiago Tomás will be the only absentee through injury for Wednesday's match, Amorim expressed his belief in his side moving through to the next stage of the UEFA Champions League.

"I believe that, since we lost 1-5 to AFC Ajax, we have to win this game to continue in the fight for qualification. I believe we can go through to the next stage. We are winning, and when we win, everything helps. What I feel is that we all know where we want to go, which gives us stability. Stability depends on results, and what we have to do is win tomorrow's game to stay on the right path."

"It will be a very difficult game. They will have different players, like their strikers. It will be different and that's what we have told the players. It is a mistake to think that the game in Turkey was easy. We will have to suffer to win. We want to have more of the ball, more chances and try to avoid the many chances that Beşiktaş JK had," he concluded.

Amorim: "We are more of a team than last season"

By Sporting CP
01 Nov, 2021

The coach reviews the win over Vitória SC

In the aftermath of the triumph against Vitória SC (1-0), on Matchday 10 of the Liga Portugal season, coach Rúben Amorim put into perspective a run of six consecutive victories.

“Those games have passed. I look at this series of games and will say that there is usually an interruption. Both the team and I just want to win the next game. Everything is open on several fronts, and there is still a long way to go. Of course, it gives us confidence and helps the team, but it's worth what it's worth”, said the coach, before being asked about the move in which Sebastián Coates headed in from a corner, something that also happened in the last game, against Moreirense FC, and twice in Turkey, against Beşiktaş JK.

“It is to the credit of Coates and Adélio Cândido, Carlos Fernandes and Emanuel Ferro, who work a lot on set pieces. We are a team who are strong in these situations and have a lot of players in different areas. Coates has this ability off headers. He knows how to see if the ball is coming through or not, and that's something certain players have. We want to improve and for Coates to continue to score," he said, before praising the Uruguayan as “a great player who thinks like a striker when he is in the opposing area, but when he is in his own area he thinks like a central defender.”

"He is an increasingly complete player and we are very happy to have such an athlete amongst us."

As for the final stretch of the match, in which Sporting CP had to suffer, Amorim stated that this is a situation that the team “must know how to live with."

“It's not the first time we've suffered in the final minutes. Once we lost some of the pressure up front, the midfielders suffered and the defenders didn't go between the lines as much. Nevertheless, we are a team that knows how to defend. We also formed a line of five when necessary and we were able to adapt to each moment of the game. We didn't defend deep as a strategy, but rather because our opponents forced us to. The others team play too, and as soon as we started to get tired, even when we changed players, keeping up high pressing is difficult if you don't get it right,” he explained.

The importance of defence for a team which has the best record in the Portuguese league, with only four goals conceded, was another of the issues addressed by the coach.
“It's one of the strengths of the team, just like it was last season. But I will say again: It's not just the defence. It is often the forwards not only attacking, but also defending and putting pressure on the midfielders. We are a very united team, and that helps when you have to defend, build in a 5-4-1 or press high up. Without conceding goals, our team always finds a way to score, even if it is through set pieces to Coates," he said.

For the coach, overtaking SL Benfica moving joint leaders with FC Porto is insignificant whilst their rivals are technically top.

“We have the same number of points, but if the season ended today we wouldn't be in first place. There's a lot to play for and it only takes a draw to change the leader. We have to look at this naturally, as it will happen during the season. We must always be alert,” he warned, before guaranteeing that this Sporting CP side “are much more of a team than last season."

“I'm lucky that the players understand the moments within a game better and better. Today we suffered a lot at the end and we showed that we still have the same ability to stick together that we did last season. We are much better, especially considering the same period last season,” he assured.

To close, Amorim shared the credit for the fact that Sporting CP have not lost at home in Liga Portugal since he arrived in Alvalade, in March 2020, going an impressive 33 home games unbeaten.

“It is a credit to everyone who is here, from the kitman to the president. Everyone has responsibility in the good times, and everyone does their part. Now we have to keep going. This sequence of games doesn't give us anything yet, and if we don't win the next match then we will be out of the Champions League. We have to win every day, and of course we want to keep this run going, but what matters is the points in the standings," he concluded.

Victory over Vitória SC takes Sporting CP joint top

By Sporting CP
01 Nov, 2021

A 1-0 win moves the team level with FC Porto

Sporting Clube de Portugal defeated Vitória SC by 1-0 at the Estádio José Alvalade on Matchday 10 of Liga Portugal, thanks to a goal from the in-form Sebastián Coates in the first half.

In their third consecutive home game, the team were up against a side who had not lost away this season and were coming off a run of three wins and a draw -against SL Benfica- in their last four matches.

Coach Rúben Amorim made seven changes to the side that beat FC Famalicão in midweek, keeping only Gonçalo Inácio, Feddal, Matheus Nunes and Sarabia in the starting XI.

Balance was the order of the day in the early stages of the match, with the home team benefiting from the first two dangerous moves via Pedro Gonçalves and Pedro Porro. Vitória SC also provided a threat early on, and responded immediately with a shot that forced Antonio Adán to make a big save.

After 15 minutes, Sporting CP established themselves in the opposite midfield and started to control proceedings. After an attempt by Gonçalves, who saw his goal disallowed for offside, on 31 minutes Coates broke the deadlock with a header off a flick-on from Paulinho off a corner.

The final moments of the first half saw a bolder Vitória SC, but the best they could muster was two shots off target. Sporting CP had a second goal disallowed, with Pablo Sarabia called offside.

For the second half, Sporting CP played closer to Bruno Varela's goal, with Matheus Nunes, isolated in the area, having a big chance to score immediately go wide.
Vitória SC advanced their lines in search of an equaliser, and had an effort graze the crossbar. Shortly after, second half substitute Ricardo Quaresma struck wide from a free kick.

Sporting CP brought on Ugarte to replace Gonçalves, with the aim of halting the transitions from their opponents and adding muscle in the middle of the park. In front of goal, Paulinho had a header go lightly off target.

Despite a greater offensive threat from the visitors before the final whistle, Os Leões took a sixth consecutive victory and continued their best run of the season to date.
With the win, the team move to joint leaders of Liga Portugal with 26 points, level with FC Porto and 1 point ahead of third-placed SL Benfica.

The next match is scheduled for Wednesday, at home, against Turkish side Beşiktaş JK in the Champions League. On November 7th, they play FC Paços de Ferreira away in Liga Portugal.

Sporting CP: Antonio Adán [GR], Gonçalo Inácio, Sebastián Coates [GR], Zouhair Feddal, Pedro Porro (Daniel Bragança, 89'), João Palhinha, Matheus Nunes (Bruno Tabata, 88'), Matheus Reis, Pedro Gonçalves ( Manuel Ugarte, 79'), Pablo Sarabia (Nuno Santos, 69') and Paulinho (Ricardo Esgaio, 89').
