The 24-year-old midfielder joins through to 2031

Sporting Clube de Portugal have signed midfielder Sergi Altimira from Real Betis, on a deal through to 2031 with a buyout clause of 80 million euros.

The Spaniard came up through the youth system at FC Barcelona, before joining CE Sabadell. He was subsequently loaned out to EC Granollers and, in 2023, was signed by Getafe CF. However, in the same summer transfer window, he was picked up by Real Betis Balompié, where he has played for the last three seasons. In 2025/26, he scored two goals in 40 appearances for the Seville-based club.

Speaking after his contract signing, Altimira began by explaining the reasons that led him to come to Alvalade.

"When there's interest from a club like this, the desire is to finish the season well so you’re an option for the following year. Now that I'm finally here, I'm very happy and eager to get started. The step I had to take in my career was coming to Sporting CP. There was a lot of interest from them, they were very keen to sign me, and a player has to go where they feel they are most wanted. I'm very happy to be here," he stated.

"Sporting CP are a very important club in Portugal and in Europe. I was lucky to play with teammates who have been here, and they only had wonderful things to tell me about the club. I have a very good relationship with Rui Silva, with whom I played in 2023/24 and 2024/25 at Betis. When he found out I was coming here, he sent me a message. He won't be back with us yet, as he’s with Portugal at the World Cup, but when he returns we'll talk and it’ll be nice to share a dressing room with him again."

Regarding his playing style, Sergi Almitira explained that his main reference is Sergio Busquets, another product of FC Barcelona's youth academy.

"I try to be inspired by him and his characteristics. I believe I have very good ball control and good passing. I trained at La Masia (FC Barcelona's academy) for seven years and learned a lot there. I want to help my teammates in defence and create moves in attack," he emphasised.

Already experienced in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League, the new arrival will now have the opportunity to debut in the UEFA Champions League.

"It's a new competition for me and the biggest club competition. I'm very excited and eager to hear the UEFA Champions League anthem at the Estádio José Alvalade. We want to try to have the same kind of campaign as last season -or even better," he said.

“Our main objective is to win every trophy possible. I can’t wait to see the Sporting CP fans. It's going to be a great year and I'm going to give everything for this club."
