Six-day suspension of Rúben Amorim

Sporting CP - Futebol, SAD wish to express the following:

1. Six months after the date on which the incident occurred, the Disciplinary Board (CD) have decided to suspend coach Rúben Amorim for having expressed, on 10/17/2020, statements following a red card received, referring to a duality of criteria used. Mr. Amorim had questioned the absence of a red card for a member of the FC Porto coaching staff, whose actions were similar to that for which the CD have now punished him;

2. Footage of the incidents are, fortunately, public knowledge, and it is possible to review them on the SPORT TV broadcast of the game, from 46 minutes 59 seconds to 47 minutes 32 seconds: https://files.fm/u/newkfkgbc.

3. The disclosure of this resolution coincides, by chance, with the day on which Rúben Amorim made statements about the process that threatens his suspension from coaching for period of one to six years;

4. The decision that has been taken unfairly punishes our coach with a six-day suspension, on the eve of Sporting CP's game against Rio Ave FC;

5. This is an unjust, disproportionate verdict and exposes the Sports Justice committee to obvious judgment: The statements made by our coach, in the context in which they were made, have no relevance when compared with attitudes of other sports agents;

6. Furthermore, it is important to emphasise that the investigator of the process proposed the case be closed, following an adequate reading of the statements, understanding the context in which they were made and the regulations. This proposal was ignored by the CD, which stubbornly intends to see in those statements an offence to the team of matchday officials.

7. The Sports Justice committee is thus exposed to the ridicule of those who do not seek truth in proceedings and whom, in an illegal interpretation of the regulations, intend to impose a gagging order on those who were merely referring to an injustice; a group of people that victimised Mr. Amorim and continue do so.

8. Sporting CP - Futebol, SAD will support coach Rúben Amorim in any and all initiatives against this illegal and unjust deliberation, namely in the appeal to be filed with the TAD;

9. Everything will be done so that, in the future, the Sports Justice committee will focus on the enormous problems that Portuguese football is going through. It would be better late than never.

Violence following the game between Moreirense FC and FC Porto

Sporting Clube de Portugal consider the acts of violence that occurred after the game between Moreirense FC and FC Porto on Monday night to be extremely serious. The image of our sport on a national level is seriously damaged by situations of this nature, which, despite not being minimally representative of the sector in general, take on enormous exposure when viewed live by the country. Senior officials of FC Porto should set an example precisely contrary to this.

It is completely unfortunate that frustration is expressed through violence and coercion of the media. It is truly regrettable that a referee should need police protection from angry coaching staff members at the end of a game.

This culture of fear, conflict and excusing violence must be eradicated from Portuguese football. The ends cannot justify these means. Responsibility has to be determined throughout the entire chain of command, from whoever orders such actions to those who execute them.

Sporting Clube de Portugal believes in a different way, in sport and in life. Actions such as those seen on Monday are not the approach to sport that we want in Portugal.

Appeal for recognition of 22 league titles (1921-40)

On December 16th, 2020, Sporting Clube de Portugal delivered a document to the President of the Portuguese Federação de Futebol federation. The historical story, independent of the club, is entitled 'Os campeonatos nacionais de futebol de 1921 a 1940' ("National football titles from 1921-1940.")

Prepared by historian Dr. Diogo Ramada Curto and doctoral student Bernardo Pinto Cruz, the document reinforces Sporting CP's appeal to have all 22 national football titles won since the club was founded in 1906 recognised.

The club have requested, at least since 2016, that their 22 titles be formally acknowledged by the FPF. Since 2017, a commission has been created by the FPF to analyse this matter.

Sporting CP will always fight for truth in sport.

Sporting CP statement on VAR

By Sporting CP
23 Oct, 2020

Sporting Clube de Portugal understand that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is an essential instrument for the protection of officiating and sporting spectacle.

VAR cannot go backwards, but neither can it stand still.

Its implementation can and must be improved, namely by adopting mechanisms that make its use more uniform and more transparent.

Sporting Clube de Portugal therefore advocate that VAR protocol be subject to intervention, in order to adopt clear and unambiguous criteria for uniformity, maintaining the principle of minimum intervention. This also includes guaranteeing that intervention does not occur when not applicable, and that it occurs when required.

The Club also believe that dialogues between VAR and the referee, when the game has stopped, be broadcast live, during the transmission of the match, similar to what happens in other sports. In these other disciplines, the decisions made by VAR and referees are transparently explained to all those involved, including spectators.

We will present our proposals for amendments on this path towards transparency.

Sporting Clube de Portugal will continue to fight for the adoption of all measures that aim to protect referees and contribute to the transparency and understanding of their performance, keeping the focus on the game that is being played, the spectacle and the sport.

Academia Cristiano Ronaldo

By Sporting CP
21 Sep, 2020

It is with great pride that Sporting Clube de Portugal announce the renaming of the club's academy to the 'Academia Cristiano Ronaldo.'

The decision has been made to recognise one of the most legendary players to emerge from the Sporting CP youth setup, who has gone on to become a 5-time Ballon d'Or winner and captain of Portugal's European Championship and Nations League winning sides, amongst other honours.

Cristiano Ronaldo joined the Sporting CP family in 1997 at the age of 12. On August 14th, 2002, at just 17 years of age, he made his senior debut against Internazionale.

The renaming of the academy immortalises the name of a player who continues to inspire young talent, both in Portugal and worldwide. On a date to be announced, conditions permitting, the club will hold the official inauguration.

This tribute is part of a project to recognise several historic figures at the club, including some of the greatest talents to come through the youth system -who will have training pitches named after them. The full list will be announced shortly.

The Academia Cristiano Ronaldo will represent the excellence present in Sporting CP's DNA, and the drive to be the best characteristic of the player from whom it takes its new name.

A club statement on the decision taken to not play the fixture

Sporting Clube de Portugal's game against SSC Napoli, set to be this season's Troféu Cinco Violinos preseason showcase match, was cancelled on Sunday upon the advice of the Director General of Health.
